An Interview with Yadira Correa, the actress playing Toshie for Vitalist Theatre’s current production of The Ghost is Here at DCA Storefront Theater
Q: You play the classic comic wife in The Ghost is Here—pioneered by Jackie Gleason and Audrey Meadows right up to contemporary sitcoms like Everybody Loves Raymond and The King of Queens. So, are you the “take no prisoners” kind of wife in real life?
YC: I don’t think so…..when I was married I was younger so I was trying to be supportive. I am always afraid of emasculating the men in my life because I am an opinionated, strong person. I’m a strange bird…I do take charge and sometimes I don’t…depends on the situation. If there is someone with a more take-charge attitude, I have no problems stepping to the side and following their direction. I’m a workaholic and a problem-solver, so once a problem is presented to me I will solve it, this can be seen as take-charge I guess. Then again there are plenty of times that I just ride along and support whatever the person in charge is doing.
Q: You are amazing in that you drink a gallon of water a day—or more. What got you started and do you notice a difference?
YC: I started drinking a gallon of water because I have a weak voice and I would lose it. A friend who is an opera singer said if that happens and I have to do a show I should drink a gallon of water. Then people were saying how we have to drink 8 cups of water a day. My water bottles kept getting bigger but I could never be quite sure of how much water I was drinking. So I figured if I have a gallon I can see how much water I drink and so now I feel better and can monitor how I feel in regards to how much water I’ve had. I’m kind of killing all these birds with one stone…or should I say one gallon…that’s a real violent image…I have a pseudo-scientific mind, so I’m always trying to correlate how my body feels with what I put in it. So this is one way to do all that and stay hydrated. I’m not sure if I notice a difference besides the fact that I get thirsty quicker because my body is used to having water…so that’s bad I guess…if we have a water shortage I will really be in trouble. I probably won’t survive the apocalypse.
Q: Do you get home to Puerto Rico often? What is the first thing you must do when you get there?
YC: No…I can’t afford to go very much and I don’t have the time to go when I do have the money. The first thing I do…depends, might be rent a car…but first stop is my grandmother and my aunt’s house and the first thing I have is a cafe con leche…my grandmother makes delicious coffee. It always amazes me. And if we are lucky, there is usually salchichon, butter, cheese, export soda crackers or fresh bread. So basically I eat. My family is all about eating…
