Kōbō Abe’s rarely-produced 1957 play, The Ghost is Here, examines the impact of war upon a culture and a nation. Set in the ruins of post-World War II Japan, at a moment in history when the nation was forced to redefine itself, the play uses original music, stylized song and dance, and a multicultural cast to bring Abe’s story to life. As Japan’s people reinvent themselves in the midst of monumental challenges, The Ghost is Here echoes throughout modern day America.

An Interview with Jaclynn Jutting, Director of Vitalist Theatre’s The Ghost is Here at DCA Storefront Theater
Q: Why is this story important to tell?
JJ: This play opens with Oba living under a bridge in the years following WWII in a war-torn Japan. It is a land of lost dreams, and it is a place and a time distant from our own, yet I think there are many parallels between then and now. I think we are currently living in a world today where dreams are hard to realize given the world around us and it’s an investigation of why that is our current reality.Posted by DCA Theater on February 8, 2012 in January - July 2012 Season, Incubator Series: Vintage Theater Collective

As I’ve spent the past few days feverishly working on a new draft of Lion on the Cheesegrater, Sarah and the ensemble have been diligently exploring the environment and the physical world of the play. Our ensemble is composed of eight women, all of whom will be playing both men and women. On Saturday the cast did a reading of Aristophanes’ Lysistrata and found connections between the original play and our reimagining, and then we dove into the tropes of noir headfirst.

We rehearsed for the first time on Thursday [January 26], meeting and moving together. It’s been a while since I have choreographed for a group of people all new to me, and I am looking forward to the process of getting to know these skilled movers.

Could there be a more perfect place for me to begin creation of The Sun King? As I enter the Chicago Cultural Center, now on my third rehearsal day, the gilded ceilings and the ornate door frames draw me into Louis XIV’s world. I feel like, when I come here to work, I step into the 17th century French court. On my first day last week, I wandered up to the GAR Rotunda for some inspiration…
