The obligation of the director is to bring to the stage a true, emotional expression and interpretation of life as art. The obligation of the critic is to strive to increase public awareness of the theatre as an important national resource and to advocate for absolute expression in theatre and theatre criticism. Please join DirectorsLabChicago for a frank and in-depth conversation between some of the city’s most prominent directors and critics as they discuss these two separate roles in the world of theatre and their influence on one another.
This program is presented in conjunction with DirectorsLabChicago 2008.
Co-founders/artistic directors Elizabeth Margolius and Karin Shook are pleased to announce the fourth annual DirectorsLabChicago which will take place at the Chicago Cultural Center July 28 - August 3, 2008. This year’s Lab will invite approximately 30 directors to explore the theme “The Power of Myth and Ritual.” The highly competitive application process has drawn interest from directors across the country as well as England, Scotland, Canada, Germany, Spain, and Bangladesh.
As in years past, the Lab will consist of hands-on workshops and panel discussions with master artists, peer-led workshops, and the unique “Stepping Away from the Stage” series, in which non-theatre professionals discuss their use of imagination and creativity in their chosen fields. DirectorsLabChicago was founded as a result of Shook and Margolius’ experience with the Lincoln Center Theater Directors Lab in New York City. DirectorsLabChicago offers environments in which emerging and established directors from around the world are able to consider, challenge, and engage in both the traditional and contemporary aspects of their craft. Past themes include “International Influence on American Theatre” and “Re-Envisioning the classics.”
