Party Of One: Post Your Review

Posted by DCA Theater on November 7, 2008 in July-December 2008 Season, Party Of One

Studio Theater
Presented by Noel Williams

Journey through the psyche of Captain Melisande Blue in Noel William’s award winning Pochinko clown and Bouffon style show.  Packed and ready to go, Mel and her baggage find themselves at a train station exiled for “loving a little too much.” Her divine ride features a feisty turnstile, dinner dates with luggage, and a two and a half foot mini version of “Gone with the Wind.” A Fringe Festival favorite throughout the county, this will be the first time the full show has been seen in Chicago.

Noel Williams delivers an astute, heartfelt performance that honestly joins tears and laughter as her clumsy, love-starved protagonist seeks the most basic human need for companionship. Her gracefully orchestrated vulnerability charms amid the heartbreak. And her seamless gift for bringing the audience into her universe must be commended. Her miniature “Gone With the Wind” parody ranks as one of the most brilliant moments I’ve experienced on a Chicago stage.

must, must, must see it!  for anyone who never has, and is apprehensive about seeing a “clown show”, just trust that it is nothing like any idea you have in your head about what a clown show is.  it is beautiful, vulnerable, hilarious and connects on a deeply human level.  Noel Williams is brilliant!  really, it’s so great, i’m going to see it twice!

This is an awesome, vulnerable and virtuosic performance from one of the best clown performers around. Noel delivers a sharp, witty, well-honed script with spontaneity and flair, working the audience with a lot of in-the-moment improvisation which makes you feel like you are getting a unique performance. The show also takes you on a journey deep into the psyche, not just hers but yours as well, many of the issues seeming to be more universal than the clown realizes. The show is directed by Sue Morrison, who is surely the greatest clown teacher/director around these parts and this is one of her best! See it, even if you think you don’t like clowns - this may change your mind (if it doesn’t blow your mind first!)

this show is a must see. if you are skeptical of seeing a clown show, don’t be, even those who aggressively resist the art form of clown can find more than enough to admire in this show. The venerability and openness of Party for One will open your heart and take you for one heck of a ride. It is charming, hilarious, touching, powerful, poignant, and inspiring all at the same time. A real treasure.

I was fortunate enough to catch a portion of this show when Noel performed it for Beast Women.  Once I learned about the chance to see the entire show, it immediately shot to the top of my “must see” list.  And Noel did not disappoint.  She is a brilliant performer, capable of switching between comedy and pathos with the utmost elegance.  She is a virtuoso, and this show should shoot to the top of *everyone’s* “must see” list!

I also saw a portion at Beast Women, and wanted more!  It is GREAT!    I LOVED IT!

Her physical comedy is great, and she plays off anything that comes up in the audience perfectly, so bonus laughs above and beyond the already packed full script.
You are instantly endeared to Capt Mel and feel her joy, pain, naive optimisim, and dissapointment so wonderfully performed by Noel.

I can’t imagine anyone not loving it.
TOTALLY (like for sure!) recommended!!!
Bring everyone you’ve ever met in your entire lifetime for an hour of enchantment!

I can not recommend this show enough! Now I know that a “clown show” might not sound great to a lot of people but you need to put the circus clown stereotypes aside and sit back and enjoy this ride. From the Moment (and I capitalize Moment on purpose) Noel William stumbles on to the stage she captures the audience and takes them on a roller coaster ride of emotions and laughs. I laughed, I cried, I laughed until I cried. It was spectacular. Don’t miss it!
