A Dancer Takes the Stage

Posted by DCA Theater on November 2, 2011 in July-December 2011 Season, DanceBridge Showcase Fall 2011

Ni’Ja Whitson has been keeping busy this fall. In addition to participating in DanceBridge, she was also a LinkUP resident at Links Hall. In September, Ni’Ja performed her solo installation work, root shock.

[the following description originally posted here]

root shock re-imagines Yoruba diasporic Orisa storytelling traditions and excavates the relationship between trauma and the ancestral / spiritual world. Through narrative and transdisciplinary expression, the text invokes a ritual performance space where time serves as an active personae and vessel. Performed in a single body, root shock sits as a dynamic experimentation into layering flesh, voice, and time. It conjures.          It releases.          It reclaims.
root shock was performed September 23, 24 & 25 2011 at Links Hall.
