The Bricklayers entertained a crowd of about 60 people last night in the DCA Studio Theater with selected scenes from their newest show in rehearsal, Mother Courage and Her Children. See below for some photos from the evening’s performance showcase.
The event was presented as a part of INCUBATOR, a series designed to support the creation of new work by emerging Chicago theater companies. Utilizing Chicago DCA Theater space and resources, participants explore new projects, develop and refine styles, and share their process with the public during a special showcase event.
Don’t miss the next INCUBATOR series showcase for XIII Pocket on Monday, August 30 at 7:30pm.

War. “We are all at war.” Thats what Mariana, our famous French director says. The play, the characters, the actors, the company. We are all fighting for something. And boy is she right.
Me and Patrick Goulding were waiting to make a complaint with our bank before rehearsal. And we become the young angry soldier from Scene 4, a scene we will work tonight. “Where’s that son of a bitch captain that refused my Bonus pay!” Hell yeah, that’s what I’m thinking as I stand outside my personal bankers cubicle!! I’m pumping myself up. I’m gonna go in there and give him something to remember. But like Mother Courage says “you’ve got to learn to eat the shit that you are served.” Patrick and I ate it. And we had to sit down and take it, just like that young soldier does.
So another battle and another day of rehearsal. We’ll find another battle to fight!!! The war goes on and on.
I’m glad that I can be a soldier for our war. If you aren’t fighting for something, what are you doing?!

The Bricklayers are well underway with Mother Courage and have begun their time at the Department of Cultural Affairs. We are thrilled to have Mariana Araoz back in the rehearsal room and it has been exciting to see her creative vision of the play start to come to life. Playing no small part in that creation is Barbra Berlovitz, who we couldn’t be more honored to have in Chicago playing the title role. Prior to our time at the DCA, we had only read the play with Barbra a handful of times. Joining her in readings was exciting, but watching her become Mother Courage in the rehearsal room has been downright electrifying. It is clear that she is digging her teeth into this role.
