Camille / La Traviata

Written by Sean Graney (adapted)
Directed by Sean Graney

Presented by The Hypocrites

January 31, 2004 — March 27, 2004
Storefront Theater

This original adaptation by The Hypocrites’ Artistic Director Sean Graney combines Alexander Dumas fils’ La Dame aux Camelias and the libretto for La Traviata, written by Francesco Maria Plave. It also features Kevin O’Donnell’s contemporary reworking of the music of Giuseppe Verdi’s opera La Traviata, based on Dumas fils’ play.

Written first as a novel by Dumas fils in 1847, the play Camille is the story of a consumptive young Parisian courtesan who renounces her illicit social life for a man only to realize she has a greater sacrifice to make in the name of love.  Newly adapted for contemporary audiences, Sean Graney also directs this tragic love story that melds together Dumas fils’ play Camille and Giuseppe Verdi’s opera La Traviata.
