An original work directed by artistic director Ann Boyd and written by ensemble member Maia Morgan, Breathing Underwater is the story of a spiritually lost man and a wheelchair-bound old woman. They journey together from loss to redemption, illness to transcendence and eventually find healing on the banks of Lake Michigan. Interweaving puppets, masks, and movement, the company has been praised for its inventiveness and has been called “among the most multi-talented experimentalists on the Chicago scene.”
Breathing Underwater features the work of Cecil Averett, Sophie Bernhardt, Ann Boyd, Sue Haas, Alison Halstead, Terry Hamilton, Heather Hartley, Shana Harvey, Hannah B. Kaye, Peter Ksander, Ryan Mahoney, Maia Morgan, Cynthia Von Orthal, Lindsay Porter, Alicia M. Senior and Heidi Thompson.
Running with Scissors is a collective of multi-disciplinary artists who combine dance, puppetry and performance art in their pieces and who have performed with numerous local theaters including Redmoon Theater, Victory Gardens, Organic Theater, Steppenwolf and Shakespeare Repertory. Running with Scissors’ first production, The Man Who Fell in Love with the Moon, was highly regarded, hailed as “remarkably audacious” by The Reader and “staggeringly imaginative” by the Chicago Sun-Times. The production was nominated for a Joseph Jefferson Award for Best New Adaptation.
