Anita, brought up the subject of the “Country’s first 1 act play festival” and we nodded and said good idea! Then, the group got together and created “Page to Stage”. This workshop where aspiring or already successful playwrights worked with Will Dunne to create a 10 minute play in 1 day went off great. Nice success! Then Rasaka needed to get off the ground and put a full production together – it had been 4 years since Masrayana. So, Yoni Ki Baat was born. During the process of putting the show on and strengthening the company’s management, we found out the DCA had granted Rasaka the use of its’ rehearsal space and then one night showcase in March of 2009. Fantastic, we could push forward on the 1 act festival. So, 2 weeks into the process, the DCA grant (use of space, publicity, etc.) has been a godsend where aspiring South Asian playwrights, actors and directors have the opportunity to work with established ones with both groups benefiting. When we found out that we were able to go to the next step with the festival, things started happening and people started brainstorming new ideas. One step at a time… Anyway, the rehearsal process, as always, has brought its share of challenges – particularly with new scripts, actors, directors, etc… This is another step in our (my) mission to grow the Arts in the South Asian community Let’s see what the results are - I am excited about the opportunity and hope we can work with the DCA on an even closer basis!
