ShawChicago returns to the Studio Theater with a staged reading of Bernard Shaw’s tale of Doctor Colenso Ridgeon. The newly knighted doctor has discovered a cure for tuberculosis but has only one slot left for the clinical trial. Should he choose a kindly medical colleague who ministers to the poor or a callous, amoral, but potentially great artist? And will his love for the artist’s wife interfere with his decision? A fascinating tug-of-war between art and science…and love, as only Shaw could tell it.

It was not staged. It was read. That’s simply too bad. I don’t pay to go to a theater to have people read a play to me. I can do this myself. I do not intent to try another Shaw Theater production.
I appreciate that our style of presentation is not for everyone and some only like full productions. However, ShawChicago has chosen to present a unique style of concert reading which allows the audience to focus on the written word without all of the extra (and expensive) trappings of sets and costumes. It has allowed us keep ticket prices modest while presenting some of the finest equity actors in Chicago. Our audience seems to agree because we’ve had 100 coming to see our productions for the past 16 years. As Janis Litwin said recently in an audience survey “Best theater performances we have. Not staged is the BEST!!”
