Could there be a more perfect place for me to begin creation of The Sun King? As I enter the Chicago Cultural Center, now on my third rehearsal day, the gilded ceilings and the ornate door frames draw me into Louis XIV’s world. I feel like, when I come here to work, I step into the 17th century French court. On my first day last week, I wandered up to the GAR Rotunda for some inspiration…
It was incredible. When that much detail and artistry has been put into the structure of a building, you can almost feel the air in a room throb with intricacy, like the vibrations from its exterior help shape it.
Today, I think I will take my video camera up to the Preston Bradley [Hall], to get some more “essence of Versailles,” then step back into the warmest dance studio in Chicago and start to create my opening, which will be the Passacaille from the Armide Opera by none other than my current favorite composer, Jean-Baptiste Lully.
